Car Accidents in Nutley: What the Data Shows

In 2023, 660 crashes were reported in Nutley — no fatalities, but 173 people were injured. If you drive in Nutley regularly, understanding where and why these crashes happen can help you stay safer on the road.

Nutley's Most Dangerous Intersections

Nutley has no published municipal crash ranking, but police reports and the township Master Plan identify these recurring danger spots:

  • Route 21 (McCarter Highway) corridor (eastern edge) — a July 2026 three-vehicle serious crash (a vehicle crossed the median) and a fatal crash in April 2024
  • Milton Avenue near the Garden State Parkway overpass — pedestrian hit-and-run fatality, February 2024
  • Centre Street — pedestrian hit-and-run fatality in 2014; the Master Plan flags Franklin Ave & Centre St, Franklin Ave & Chestnut St, Bloomfield Ave & High St, and Bloomfield Ave & Chestnut St for pedestrian-safety and traffic-calming upgrades
  • Franklin Ave & Harrison — pedestrian struck in a crosswalk

Highways That Run Through Nutley

  • Route 21 (McCarter Highway) — north-south along Nutley’s eastern edge
  • Garden State Parkway — clips the eastern edge (Exit 51 in Nutley); Route 3 — just south in Clifton
  • Main arterials: Franklin Ave (CR 658), Centre St, Bloomfield Ave

What Makes Nutley's Roads Dangerous

Route 21 is a commuter highway to Newark and Paterson with at-grade merge points and pedestrian exposure. Franklin Avenue’s downtown commercial corridor mixes shoppers with through-traffic, and commuters cut through between Route 21, the Parkway, and Route 3. A Centre Street bridge replacement (circa 2018) pushed truck detours onto Franklin Avenue.

New Jersey Car Insurance Rules You Should Know

New Jersey is a no-fault state for car accidents. That means your own Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage pays your medical bills after a crash, regardless of who caused it. Here’s what every NJ driver should understand:

Verbal Threshold vs. Zero Threshold

When you bought your NJ auto policy, you chose one of two lawsuit options — and it dramatically affects your rights after a crash:

  • Verbal threshold (limitation on lawsuit option): You can only sue for pain and suffering if your injuries meet specific legal criteria — death, dismemberment, significant disfigurement, displaced fractures, loss of a body part, or permanent injury. Most NJ drivers have this option because it’s cheaper.
  • Zero threshold (no limitation on lawsuit option): You can sue for pain and suffering for any injury, with no severity requirement. Costs more but preserves your full rights.

If you don’t remember which option you chose, check your policy declarations page — it matters enormously for your case.

Minimum Required Coverage in New Jersey

Coverage TypeMinimum Required
Bodily injury liability (per person)$25,000
Bodily injury liability (per accident)$50,000
Property damage liability$25,000
Personal Injury Protection (PIP)$15,000 per person, per accident

What To Do After a Car Accident in Nutley

The steps you take in the hours after a crash protect both your health and your legal claim:

  1. Check for injuries and call 911. Get medical help on the way immediately — even if injuries seem minor.
  2. Move to safety if possible. Get vehicles out of travel lanes, turn on hazard lights.
  3. Call the police. A Nutley Police report creates the official record your claim depends on.
  4. Exchange information. Name, insurance, license plate, and phone number from every driver involved.
  5. Document everything. Photograph all vehicles, damage, skid marks, road conditions, traffic signals, and your injuries.
  6. Get witness information. Names and phone numbers of anyone who saw what happened.
  7. See a doctor within 24 hours — even if you feel fine. Adrenaline masks injuries; medical records link them to the crash.
  8. Notify your insurance company promptly, but stick to basic facts.
  9. Do not admit fault — not to the other driver, not to police, not to insurance. Do not give a recorded statement before speaking with a lawyer.
  10. Call a car accident lawyer before the evidence disappears and the deadlines run.

About Nutley, NJ

Nutley is an American township in Essex County, New Jersey. According to the 2020 US Census, the town had a total of 28,434. Nutley was formed from a portion of Belleville Township that was renamed Franklin Township by an act of the New Jersey legislature on February 18, 1874. On March 5, 1902, Nutley officially became a town in place of Franklin Township. More than a dozen municipalities in Essex County eventually changed their status to townships to take advantage of federal revenue-sharing laws that gave townships a larger share of government help than municipalities did on a per-capita basis. When the town converted to township status in 1981, it joined four other municipalities in Essex County that had previously done so.

Nutley Car Accident Lawyers Answer Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Car Accidents

What should I do if I was in a car accident?

Can I file a lawsuit against the other motorist for damages after a car accident?

It varies. Drivers in New Jersey are required by law to possess PIP (personal injury protection) insurance or no-fault insurance. You are covered by this insurance in the event of an accident. Whoever caused the accident is not important.
However, you might be able to seek compensation from the at-fault driver if you choose a “restricted right to sue” option in your policy. This is conceivable if you can demonstrate that the other motorist was at fault for the collision and you have sustained catastrophic or permanent harm.
It is crucial to discuss your case with knowledgeable auto injury attorneys in Nutley, NJ. The lawyers at The Epstein Law Firm, P.A. will assess your case without charge and go over your choices. We’ll work with you to choose the most effective course of action for pursuing compensation.

Should I accept the insurance provider’s settlement proposal?

It varies. Before accepting any offers of compensation, it is in your best interests to speak with a knowledgeable auto injury lawyer in Nutley, New Jersey. Insurance companies frequently make settlement offers that are much below the actual value of your case. To conserve money and prevent damages, they take this action. An accomplished lawyer from The Epstein Law Firm, P.A. will assist you in estimating the value of your case. They will provide you with advice on whether or not you should take the insurance company’s offer seriously. In order to obtain fair compensation for your injuries, our attorneys will bargain with the insurance company on your behalf.
