Under New Jersey law, Uber is required to offer insurance on vehicles that are being driven for the service. As a passenger riding in an Uber, the higher level of insurance coverage required by law becomes available to compensate you if you are injured in an accident.
Uber’s insurance provides up to $1.5 million in liability coverage for injury and property damage, which is primary to all other applicable auto insurance policies. Uber also provides $1.5 million in uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. This coverage can be useful if you were injured while riding in an Uber that was hit by another at-fault motorist, when that motorist’s auto insurance coverage is insufficient to fully compensate you for your injuries and losses.
Uber also provides insurance coverage for its drivers in the amount of $50,000 per person/$100,000 per incident in bodily injury liability coverage and $25,000 per incident in property damage liability coverage, if an accident occurs when a driver is logged into the mobile application but has not accepted a passenger request or does not have a passenger in the vehicle.
