Drunk driving led to death of two on Interstate 95

The Jersey Journal reports that a woman accused of causing a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 95 near Darien on May 7 in which two individuals died was to appear in state Superior Court in Stamford Connecticut on charges related to that accident.

The 26-year-old Hartford Connecticut woman responsible for the accident, accused of driving drunk, now faces charges of second-degree manslaughter, reckless driving, and DUI.

The victims of that crash, an 18-year-old woman and a 42-year-old, had been riding in a tractor-trailer driven by the man. The young woman was reportedly five months pregnant at the time of the accident. According to her high school principal, she had been absent from school most of her junior year while she tended to her mother, who fell into a coma after having a stroke. The principal said she had worked with tutors to ensure that she would graduate on track.

The Hartford woman, according to sources, had three passengers in her vehicle at the time of the crash. She had apparently been driving a rented Dodge Caliber SXT northbound on Interstate 95 and lost control when she passed the tractor-trailer. After hitting the truck and causing the truck to separate from the trailer, the truck burst into flames.

The young woman's high school faculty and staff members, following the accident, raised approximately $5,000 to help her family pay for her burial. Sources didn't indicate the young woman's connection to the truck driver.

Sources said the Hartford woman was detained, following the accident, on $30,000 bond and placed on suicide watch at Connecticut hospital. She is currently being held at a York Correctional Institute in Niantic.
