Disability discrimination

Many New Jersey readers may either suffer from a disability or know someone who does. Individuals who suffer from disabilities may experience various forms of discrimination in the workplace, including harassment, failure to make reasonable accommodations or wrongful termination.

Charges filed against truck driver in fatal New Jersey crash

Authorities have charged the driver of a dump truck that rear-ended a car at a red light with death by auto. The force of the crash pushed both vehicles across a park and ended with the car submerged in a Lawrence lake beneath the truck, resulting in the death of the 58-year-old Trenton man who was driving the car.

Regulations in place to prevent truck driver fatigue

Drivers living in New Jersey may find some relief in knowing that new federal regulations for truck drivers took effect on July 1, 2013. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration first announced the regulations, which were designed to reduce fatigue for truck drivers on the road, in December 2011. Trucking companies were given 18 months to incorporate the new rules. However, the rules were expected to result in changes for less than 15 percent of the trucking workforce.

Truck driver kills police officer in the line of duty

On July 17, a New Jersey police officer was killed while checking for speeders on the shoulder of Route 17 in Waldwick. At the time of the accident, the 32-year-old police officer had been operating radar in an unmarked police car near the intersection of Bergen Avenue. When the driver of a tractor-trailer lost control around 1:30 a.m., the police car was struck and pushed into a retaining wall.

Former executive files lawsuit over wrongful termination

A former executive of New Jersey's Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. filed a lawsuit against the company after being terminated from her position. She believes the termination was because she blamed the company for disguising kickbacks as research. While the company denies the allegations, it is not the first time that it has been under investigation or been sued for such business practices. The U.S. Attorney in Manhattan accused the company of providing kickbacks earlier in the year.

New Jersey vehicular accident claims 2 lives

A two-vehicle wreck in New Jersey claimed the lives of two Pennsylvania women on June 27 on Route 49. The accident occurred just before 8 p.m., according to the New Jersey State Police who explained that the 52-year-old female driver of a GMC Terrain and her 50-year-old female passenger were both killed when a Ford van drove into them in a head-on collision. Both vehicles landed on the shoulder of the road, and the pair was trapped in the SUV as numerous emergency workers rushed to the site in a vain attempt to free them. However, they both died at the scene.
