Bicyclist Injured at Busy Ridgewood Intersection

The mother of a 14-year-old Waldwick boy says he is "doing a lot better" following a bicycle accident at a busy Ridgewood intersection on Thursday, July 22.

According to the Ridgewood police report concerning the accident, Sal Orsino was crossing the intersection on his bicycle when he was struck by the driver of a truck. The driver, Colin Sherlow of Ho-Ho-Kus, had the right of way and was not charged by police in the incident. He later expressed concern about the boy's condition.

Orsino was taken to a local hospital for what was described as serious injuries to his chest and head. Police stated that he was not wearing a bike helmet when he was struck.

Several other drivers witnessed the accident. An ambulance driver directly behind Sherlow stated that Sherlow hit his brakes and skidded prior to hitting Orsino. A driver behind the ambulance told the police that she saw Orsino "jump the curb" and enter the intersection without first looking. Orsino later told a Ridgewood police officer at the hospital that he didn't remember the accident and could only recall nearing the intersection and then being transported in an ambulance.

Orsino was bicycling with several other boys when the accident occurred. They told police that they thought they had the right of way at the intersection.

Orsino is presently back at home recovering.
